Assam's Sonitpur selected for 'Saakshar Bharat Award'

Sonitpur district of Assam has been selected for the 'Saakshar Bharat Award' in recognition of its efforts in implementation of the SB programme, according to a National Literacy Mission Authority (NLMA) letter to the state government.
The award comprising a trophy and a certificate will be given by the President on the occasion of International Literacy Day in Delhi on September 8, Y S K Seshu Kumar, Joint secretary & Director General of NLMA, ministry of Human Resource Development department of School Education & Literacy said in his letter to Assam Principal Secretary of Education department P K Barthakur.
Munin Sarma, Chief Executive Officer of Sonitpur Zila Parishad told PTI that two districts have been selected for this award across the country and they are Sonitpur and Chhattisgarh.
Literacy rate in Sonitpur district has grown from 64 per cent to 72 per cent due to vocational sector work undertaken in remote areas, including among tea garden workers, government officials said.
