On the auspicious moment of the country's 70th Independence Day, I inaugurated the War Memorial on the north bank of Dighalipukhuri, Guwahati this evening. This is the first War Memorial in the state of Assam to honour our martyrs and brave soldiers.
I took this opportunity to salute our armed forces who remain forever ready to make the supreme sacrifice for the country and the nation. They are the real pillars of our nation and democracy.
The War Memorial on the bank of Dighalipukhuri would remind our younger generations about the sacrifices and challenges of our soldiers in the line of duty, and motivate them to join the Armed forces in large numbers to serve the country.
Dighalipukhuri is also a symbol of Lachit Borphukan's courage and patriotism. So, the War Memorial in such a historic site would further add glory to the entire exercise and contribute in the nation-building process.
I appealed to the people of Assam to be proactive in preserving and maintaining this great monument.
