Flood situation worsen in Barpeta: Char dwellers cry for help

By Kazi Neel, Guwahati, 24 July, 2016 :
In Barpeta district more than 200 villages have been affected by the recent flood. The water level is still increasing. Char or river islands are one of the worst affected areas in the district. Along with flood erosion has created havoc in the char villages of the district. On 24th July 2016, a group of our volunteers visited the flood affected families at Koimari, Balikuri NC, Tapajuli Pather, Mazidbhita and Bhera villages under Mandia development block of Barpeta district of Assam.
Most of the char houses have been inundated by flood water, houses of few families in Tanpara have been eroded by the flood water. Many of the flood affected families of those villages are taking shelter in 3 raised platforms. Cattles are also shifted to safer places. However, a large number of cattle have been washed away in the recent flood including big animals like horse and cows.
There are cases of waterborne diseases reported from multiple places.
In one case, an elderly couple has been starving since last two days and stranded in their submerged house in Tapajuli Pathar village. Our team has provided emergency support to the family and shall start working tomorrow to provide further assistance.
Today, government officials have surveyed the affected village. Ward member of one of the Panchayat informed the team that local administration is expected start releif works from tomorrow.
Major emergency challenges faced by the flood affected char dwellers are:
1) Drinking water
2) Food stuffs
3) Cattle fooder
4) Baby food
5) health care for both human and cattle
