At least 40 police recruits were killed when a suicide
bomber attacked an Afghan police convoy outside capital Kabul today afternoon. The
incident happened when a convoy carrying cadets returning from a graduation
ceremony was hit by two suicide bombers. Mousa Rahmati, the district governor
of Paghman, said that trainee police officers were returning from a training
center in Wardak province and were heading to the capital on leave. “There were
two explosions that targeted the police cadets vehicles on the outskirts of
Kabul city,” Sediq Sediqqi, Interior Ministry spokesman, said. Taliban spokesman
Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in an email sent to
media. The Taliban have been waging an insurgency against the government since being ousted from power by a US-led coalition in 2001.
On June 20, 14 Nepali security officials who were
heading to work at the Canadian embassy were killed in a massive blast. Eleven others were killed in a string of bombings across Afghanistan on the same day.,
