GUWAHATI, July 27:
The flood situation in Assam further worsened Wednesday with nearly 17 lakh people marooned in the devastating wave of floods in 21 districts. Thirteen people have so far lost their lives in the current wave of floods.
The Brahmaputra and its tributaries are flowing over the danger level at many places with an estimated 3,000 villages inundated in the deluge. The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Guwahati, Neematighat (Jorhat), Tezpur, Dhubri and Goalpara.
Meanwhile, in Guwahati, the Brahmaputra is flowing 86 cms above the danger level and is threatening to spill over and flood the economic nerve centre Fancy Bazar, Machkhowa, Bharalumukh. Water of the swollen river has already entered Bonda on the outskirts of Guwahati and in some places at the Uzan Bazaar bank.
The Burhidehing at Khowang (Dibrugarh), Subansiri at Badatighat (Lakhimpur), Dhansiri at Numaligarh (Golaghat), Jia Bharali at Sonitpur, Puthimari at Rangia, Beki at Barpeta and the Sankosh river at Golokganj are flowing above the danger level.
A total of 472 relief camps and 186 relief distribution camps have been opened where 1,12,853 people are taking shelter.
Meanwhile, at Kaziranga national park, floodwaters have wreaked havoc and wild animals are moving over to the nearby Karbi hills to save themselves from the deluge. Floodwaters have also spilled over to the national highway 37 at many places.
