Assam govt to pass new act to castigate corrupt govt workforce

Guwahati:
The government of Assam has said that it will enact a new act to prohibit and punish corrupt government employees, including staff of PSU and autonomous bodies.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has asked Chief Secretary V K Pipersenia to prepare modalities for a legislation to assess properties of the Ministers, MLAs, ex-Ministers, ex-MLAs, government and retired officers, an official release said.
Officials of the Public Sector Undertakings and autonomous bodies will also come within the ambit of the new system to bring in transparency and weed out corrupt practices, it added.
"The new legislation will add more teeth to weed out corrupt practices and will recommend stringent action like confiscation of property if property disproportionate to their known sources of income is found," Sonowal said.
The Chief Minister has directed that a system should be put in place, wherein all grade-I and grade-II officers of the State government will have to submit their property return (immovable) within December 31.
Officers failing to comply with the new rules will invite stringent action like denial of timely promotion, bank loan and issuance of passport among others.
